Ergonomics and being seated correctly
December 10, 2005
Working at a desk and working at a computer for long periods puts strain on the body. You need to ensure that you are seated correctly to reduce the risk of strain and pain due to incorrect posture.
You should be sitting up straight with your back supported and your arms should be at a 90 degree angle to your desk or keyboard. This means your elbows should level with your keyboard.
Your knees should not be in contact with the seat as this can restrict blood flow. Feet should be flat on the floor or placed on a foot rest.
Make sure your line of sight is inline with the top of your computer screen. The viewing distance between your eyes and the screen should be between 18 to 30 inches.
If you suffer discomfort or aches in any part of your body after you have been seated for a while then it is probably your body telling you there is something wrong. Take note and adjust your seating to relieve the symptoms. Remember to take regular breaks from sitting in one position so that you can stretch your legs and rest your eyes.
