Health benefits of drinking water
January 25, 2006
You have probably heard this many times before, you should drink 8 glasses of water a day. This may seem a lot of water to drink but spread over an entire day, say 16 hours, that's only 1 glass every 2 hours.
Drinking plenty of water will have many benefits.
- Removes toxins from the body
- Detoxifies your liver and kidneys
- Reduces headaches
- Increases your energy and concentration
It can be hard to drink enough water each day when you are used to drinking tea and coffee so here are a few tips. Use a water filter, it removes lime scale and makes the water taste better. As a personal preference I add either half a squeezed lemon or lime to a glass of water. Try it, it is not as bad as it sounds.
Healthy drink alternatives

Spending all day at work in an office or working from home the easy option is to put the kettle on to make a tea or coffee. In an office it is easy to go to the vending machine and get a drink. The only problem with this is that it is not very healthy.
Everyone knows that you should drink plenty of water, as much as 2 litres a day. I bet you didn't know that you can burn up to an extra 100 calories a day by drinking cold water. This is because the body has to heat the water to body temperature. Add a drop of lemon into your water and this will also help cleanse your liver.
Green tea is also thought to be a healthy alternative to coffee. The antioxidants in green tea are claimed to help prevent cancer of the throat and stomach. Drinking 5 cups of green tea a day can also contribute to burning up to 80 calories a day due to the boost it gives your metabolism.
Boost your immunity

No one likes it when they get a cold, even worse is when you have a cold and you have to work. If you work in a small office or an office at home and work near others then chances are you will catch a cold.
Virologist Professor John Oxford says that an average sneeze spreads viruses out to a 20 foot radius. That means you have a very good chance of breathing in the common cold virus. Other than staying away from people there are a few things you can do to boost your immunity.
People who eat more apples tend to get less colds, it is thought this is because people who eat apples tend to eat more fruit generally and so tend to have a healthier diet. Try to eat more fruit and vegetables to help boost your immune system.
We work in an air conditioned environment. The dry atmosphere inside tends to dry out the mucosal membrane in the nose, this means that they are less efficient at filtering out germs.
If you go for a 15 minute walk each day you will be less likely to get a cold. Walking outside also improves your mood. Make a point of going for a short walk in your lunch break.
Healthy drinks at work
December 16, 2005
Working from home or at the office it's very tempting to grab a coffee when you feel you need a drink. You feel the caffeine gives you a bit of a boost when you need it and for a while you feel better and more alert. The problem with this is that it is not good for you, caffeine is addictive and is a diuretic which means it make you go to the toilet more often.
Alternatives to caffeine drinks
Most things in moderation are good, you should look at coffee as a treat and drink it in moderation. Look at alternatives instead of coffee and tea which also has high levels of caffeine.
- Chocolate drinks(low caffeine)
- Herbal tea
- Low sugar juice
- Fruit juice(counts a one of your 5 daily vegetable)
- Malt drinks
- Fruit smoothie(counts a one of your 5 daily vegetable)
You may not like some of these drinks or may have never tried many of them. Make it your goal to replace 2 of your daily coffee or tea drinks with a more healthy alternative. Try mint tea after lunch, it has almost no calories and no sugar and is good for digestion. Try a fruit juice or smoothie in the morning, they count as one of your recommended 5 daily fruit and vegetable portions.
